Creating a book cover for one of my favourite novels, Atonement by Ian McEwan was a very personal experience. It is a book with with symbolism in abundance and nothing is more symbolic than the family heirloom vase.
The concept was based around the central theme of Briony's re-writing of her history, using embellishment and lies, in an attempt to atone for the sins she committed as a young adolescent.
I decided to use Kintsugi (Japanese method of repairing with gold) to demonstrate Briony's attempts to repair the tragic damage done to her sister and her lover. She tries to 'fix' the fractures and destruction by re-writing them as something beautiful.
